Black wings or dark wings in most traditions and religions, as well as everything I remember, signify taint of an Angel or the status of being Fallen. When an Angel commits sinful acts, sinful being very broad and loosely used here, their wings darken and they become tainted. In disobeying a direct order of the Creator, an Angel's wings turn black and the Angel Falls.
Taint can be redeemed, a Fall cannot as of yet.

Many Angels who are not tainted in any way do manifest other colored wings from white, these usually derive something from their purpose (the most common is that angels dealing with death will manifest black wings and robes, as the color black is appropriate to the occasion).
It is my belief that as Angels defy the nature by which they were created their wings lose the splendor of which they started with. Let's say that you do something bad as an Angel, you are assigned a task to... let's be cliche and say you're removing a demonic entity which is preying upon a few poor people and thriving off the energy from their fear. You have a particular dislike for this activity and you not only remove it, but you torture it for a while first, then destroy it in a nasty and painful way because you have a bit of wrath showing up.
This would taint your feathers, or give you a few black ones. In the act of penance and atonement for that act, one may be able to expunge that taint.
If in that situation, you had said to the Creator who has ordered this task, "Hell no, I ain't doin' it" and then bought the Demon a beer... you Fall.
I personally believe that the Fallen are not eligible to be redeemed until the Morning Star is redeemed or destroyed.

Taint showing in the wings is common, I have seen it many times. (even with myself)
I personally do not think it is impossible to redeem fallen, however extraordinarily difficult. This has been up for debate, among our kind for a long time. I do not argue about it, simply because I have seen it come between far to many angels. I don't want to do that.

Colours referring to good or evil are a human invention. It's symbolism to better understand the things that are hard to comprehend. It differs from culture to culture. In some, white is a colour of death and mourning, and would that not be a bad colour? The creator made us all specifically how we are, all individuals. Outward appearances aren't important to a god who knows everything about you. It's the heart that matters and darkens, not the wings.

However, Shade, since most of the things in relation to the Creator are beyond our ken, our mind fills in the blanks with something that we can comprehend. I believe that if an Angel appears to a Christian, they will see the typical Angel, whereas would that same Angel appear to a Buddhist, they would see a Bodhisattva.
In this case, the darkness of the wings reflects the darkness of the heart, and the dampening of their glory.

To those who see the colours that way, yes, but don't you think the maker is slightly beyond superficial symbolism?

superficial, not quite
a physical manifestation of the dampening of one's glory...
and symbolism... everything is symbolism, the Creator has one major, major love for the dramatic
