really i feel there should be a healthy debate of what the astral plane 'is'...
yes yes....i know the "you can't put a definition or a box" and 'perception vs reality' philosophy 101 rants.....so beyond "it's what you make it" does anyone have more detailed analysis of its anatomy/physiology
some feel it a purely mental/imagination realm while other seem to place it as more a spiritual plane.
so first question is: what is the astral plane to you?
and then: what purposes have you found for it
and lastly: rules/boundaries/insights into its anatomy/physiology
debate and counterpoints are great...but please answer these before scrutinizing another's opinion......so your views may be just as open for objectivity

The Astral via my perspective......
I see the Astral as a place that mixes perception of your own imagination and a preexisting-non existing place.....I know, I'm friggin wierd.
Purposes for the astral realm, I've found it to be a place of relaxation, a place to communicate with my deity and spiritual beings.....A place where I can unleash my pent up anger and frustration without concequence...
Rules and boundries? I find none that are noticeable, if anything it give me a hell of a lot more freedom than this limiting sack of flesh I inhabit....The astral is pretty much everything at a whim, if of course you know what you are doing...some people i know of got the living shit scared out of them because they had no control over their thoughts and/or emotions.....
Just my view on the thing of course, I dont care to debate truth or not truth...nobody really knows, for all we know everything we know of is an illusion, so yeah....

From what I've done in the astral plane I noticed some "rules" that go on there.
To me it's a pre-existing place that is very much based on "intent made manifest" and "your perceptions create your reality" there. It won't work like this physical world we know well for those reasons. It has a difference from the world/place of dreams because it is not as reliant on symbolism to get the point across, is more inclined to follow your direction (as long as you can give clear and unfettered/unconfused directions), and is more like a lucid dream than an actual normal and random dream. Admittedly to me it feels more "normal" and "natural" than anything here to be honest.
The rules I've noticed are:
-be nice to the inhabitants for they may find issue with you otherwise and since they know how to work it very well, they will be able to kick your butt with ease
-intent becomes the action. Better have a clear and focused mind for this because otherwise you can mangle things up or your random thoughts will become real so you have to have some mental discipline here to not accidentally end up chased around by your fears made manifest.
-your perception becomes your reality. If you're not expecting to see it or cannot understand what is happening, your brain will translate it into whatever it can process better, and therefore multiple people will have multiple and different accounts of what exactly went down and what it looked like in the process. Even coming back later when you've learned more and opened your mind more will result in a different appearance to you because of that.
-the only limitation is in your mind. This is where those with more imagination and mental control tend to have an edge over those who struggle with that. If you are not used to understanding that you can float, fly, teleport, or even bring out your weapons from nothing, then you'll be scrambling in the face of those who know this, are comfortable with this, and can readily utilize it to devastating effect.
-as long as your umbilical cord connects your spirit to your physical body, you can ALWAYS find your way home. This lets you know where you've been and if you place your hands on the cord again and set the intention to go home swiftly and smoothly, then you will speed home via that cord. -your umbilical cord is unbreakable, strong, and impervious to harm. Remember this and it will be so. Most cannot see your umbilical cord so even if it is blatantly obvious to you, it probably won't be to them. -you can look and be and move however you want to here. The only limitation is your mind and what feels comfortable to you. Experiment and have fun with this! -people are not "supposed to tell only the truth and never lies" here anymore than humans are supposed to on Earth. Keep that in mind when you're talking with someone because while you may want to believe anything they say, they may have other agendas and want to dupe you and take advantage of you - just like any human on Earth. Some are good, some are nasty, and most are in-between and their agendas may or may not be good for you, but you can't find out so easily unless they wish to tell for some reason.
-telepathy is how people communicate, that and aura and energy reading. Better start brushing up on the skills of talking to someone else with just your mind alone and to notice the energy around those whom you meet. You'll find that far more than you realized can and will be able to communicate with you there. The rocks, trees, stars, planets, wind, fire, etc. all of those can talk and have sentience. Be polite and kind when you can.
-shield your physical body or ask your guides and guardians to help you for every trip out. Otherwise your body looks like it has a tempting "vacancy" sign up and some nasties might get the bright idea of trying to get in.
-shield your spirit on every trip out and make sure you have guides and guardians around you in case. They'll be good backup in case you get into any trouble out there, and will also help explain to you anything weird or unusual you came across.
-and the most important - since this is based on intent and perceptions and all - Believe that you are safe, secure, protected, and invisible. Believe this strongly with all of you so there's no doubts to break that or dilute the intent. Then you shall be so because your intent and perception creates your reality. Now you'll be safe and won't be seen or noticed by the other spirits here in the astral plane.
